The Internet and World Wide Web

  • The Internet is a vast global network made up of interconnected computers and electronic devices. The creation of the internet cannot be attributed to any single individual. It evolved over time through the contributions of many engineers and researchers. The closest prototype to the internet as we know it today was developed as a government weapon during the Cold War. It was used as a means of communication by scientists and researchers. Since then, it has transformed into a vast network that connects people across the world. Today the internet is used for communication, research and information, commerce, entertainment, and so much more.
  • The World Wide Web is an information system accessed via the internet using web browsers. It is made up of interlinked hypertext documents, allowing a user to search for information and browse relevant documents. It was invented by Sir Tim Berners-Lee in 1989 as a platform for research and academic collaboration. Today, the World Wide Web is used in various aspects of daily life. It is how most people navigate the internet.
  • The World Wide Web is not the same as the Internet. They work together, however, as The World Wide Web is accessed via the internet. While the internet provides infostructure to connect devices globally, the World Wide Web provides a way to organize and access information.
  • The first website was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the WWW. It went live on August 6, 1991. It's still up and can be accessed at http://info.cern.ch.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and Lamarr

  • Hedy Lamarr was an actress and inventor. She invented a spread system communication system that was used during WWII. This laid the groundwork for modern wireless communication technology like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A song entitled "Hedy Lamarr" by Moon Hooch pays tribute to Lamarr's contributions to modern technology.
  • Bluetooth was developed by a Swedish Telecommunications company called Ericsson in the 1990s. It was invented by Dr. Jaap Haartsen and his team. The name "Bluetooth" was inspired by the 10th Century Danish King Harold "Bluetooth" Gormsson. The logo is based on King Harold's initials, represented in Nordic Ruins as an overlaid "H" and "B".
  • Wi-Fi was developed by a group of engineers at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers in the late 1990s. The Original intended name for Wi-Fi was "WaveLan". The name Wi-Fi was coined by a marketing firm called Interbrand Corporation in 1999.
