Calligram

 Calligram Project

Artist Statement

This piece is a calligram picturing Russian Nesting Dolls created from a letter I wrote to myself 20 years in the future. In the letter, I urged my future self to remember and honor each version of me. I acknowledged that every past version of myself lives within me now, making me the person I am today.  I felt that a set of Russian Nesting Dolls was fitting imagery to convey these themes. The largest doll is filled with stacked, increasingly smaller copies of itself. The spread of dolls represents each version of myself, including the person I am today and who I'll be in twenty years.

Sketch and Letter

Dear Kristina,
Congratulations on being old. You should be nearing your fortieth birthday which is pretty unfathomable to me. In about a month, I’ll turn twenty. In all honesty, twenty is a pretty unfathomable age to me too. I’m not used to being an adult yet. It is hard to picture my twenties and even harder to imagine creeping up on middle age. Growing up means rapidly and constantly changing. I feel like a different person from who I was a few years ago and a few years before that. Twenty years away, you are pretty much a stranger to me, however, I hope that I am not a stranger to you.
What do you remember about me? Do you remember procrastinating this assignment until 11:30 the night before? Do you remember being in college, having no clue what the future would look like? I wonder how you look at me. Maybe you’ll think back and laugh, or cringe at old memories, or maybe you will see me more kindly than how I see myself now. I like to imagine you looking back with gentler eyes, at peace knowing that everything has worked out for the best. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing that things will “work out”.  I don’t know what you look like or how your life has turned out. All I can know for certain is that I will be there with you to find out. When I look back at my younger self, I see a girl who isn’t around anymore. I say that because she isn’t gone. She has become a part of me and I know that one day I will be a part of you. Each and every version of ourselves lives within us and through each experience we become a fuller, stronger person. I hope that you’ll honor me and all the me’s that came before and will come after. We make you who you are.
Best,
Kristina
